The club and player remain on good terms—but Maguire’s renewal could hinge on a major pay reduction.
Manchester United are reportedly in positive discussions with Harry Maguire over extending his contract at Old Trafford, though the defender may have to accept a significant financial compromise to stay.
Maguire, who joined United in 2019 for £80 million ($106.4 million), is now in the final year of his six-year deal—plus a one-year option.
The agreement, which covered the prime of his career from age 26 to 33, is set to expire at the end of this season, making him a free agent next summer if no extension is reached.
Despite previous struggles with form and fitness, Maguire has reestablished himself as a key figure under Rúben Amorim, featuring prominently in the Portuguese coach’s system and maintaining a strong leadership presence within the squad.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, both parties are satisfied with the player’s current role.

However, the sticking point in negotiations revolves around salary.
United are only expected to offer new terms if Maguire agrees to a reduced wage package.
Before the club-wide pay cut triggered by failure to qualify for the Champions League, Maguire was earning around £190,000 per week.
Recent reports in England suggest United are now preparing an offer closer to £140,000 per week, reflecting his age and the club’s broader restructuring of wages.
Manchester United Turned Down Summer Offers
During the recent transfer window, Maguire confirmed that United had rejected several approaches for his services.
Multiple Premier League and Serie A clubs reportedly made enquiries, but the 31-year-old insisted the club were unwilling to let him go.
“I’m pretty sure the club made it clear this summer that I couldn’t leave under any terms,” Maguire said.
“Over the next few months, we’ll sit down and discuss what we both want. It’s an amazing club to play for—you’d be silly to walk away from it too soon.”
Interestingly, Manchester United were open to selling Maguire a year earlier in 2024, even accepting a £30 million offer from West Ham United.
The player, however, turned down the move, determined instead to fight for his place and revive his reputation at Old Trafford.
Under Amorim, that gamble seems to be paying off.
Maguire has become a trusted presence in defense once again—proof that experience and perseverance can still earn a place at Manchester United’s core, even amid financial tightening and a changing football landscape.
