Sergio Ramos Set to Walk Away From Monterrey as a New Career Chapter Awaits

The clock is ticking on Sergio Ramos’s time in Mexico, and with his contract set to expire soon, the Spanish icon is preparing for another major turn in a career that continues to defy age and expectation.

Sergio Ramos Exits Monterrey, Prepares for Next Big Adventure

Approaching his 40th birthday in March, Ramos has shown no signs of slowing down in Liga MX.

He became Monterrey’s captain from day one, anchoring the Rayados’ back line and scoring seven key goals across 31 appearances this year.

His leadership has been central to their impressive Apertura 2025 campaign.

Yet despite his importance, several Spanish outlets—including El Chiringuito and MARCA—report that Ramos has decided not to extend his stay with Monterrey beyond the end of 2025.

While the club hoped to negotiate a new deal, the defender is said to be planning a fresh chapter rather than retirement.

According to journalist Juanfe Sanz, Ramos’s choice caught Rayados off guard.

The club’s sporting director, José Antonio Noriega, had recently confirmed ongoing renewal talks, expecting the veteran to remain for at least another year.

Ramos, however, appears firm. His goal is clear: lead Monterrey to the Apertura 2025 title—and then move on.

The reported sticking point lies in the contract terms.

Monterrey were willing to renew the deal for six months, or one year with a six-month review clause.

Ramos, on the other hand, wants a fully guaranteed one-year contract.

Without an agreement in the coming weeks, he will depart as a free agent—an opportunity that will certainly draw interest from clubs abroad.

His physical resurgence has only increased his market value.

After leaving Sevilla in 2024 and spending half a year without a club, Ramos rebuilt himself in Mexico.

Since the 2025 Club World Cup, he has looked sharp, dependable, and fully fit, proving he can still handle a demanding schedule.

The Saudi Pro League, which tried to sign him in 2023 after his exit from PSG, is already rumored as a possible destination.

For now, Ramos remains focused on the task at hand: finishing 2025 with silverware.

Monterrey hold a 2–0 advantage over Club América heading into the decisive second leg of the quarterfinals, eyeing their first Liga MX title since 2019.

Whether he stays in Mexico or moves on, one thing is clear—Sergio Ramos is not closing the book. He’s simply turning the page.
