Barcelona’s recruitment drive for global youth talent continues to accelerate, with the Catalan giants reportedly finalizing a deal for Dutch defender Juwensley Onstein.
The promising center-back joins from Jong Genk this January, marking another strategic addition to the club’s defensive ranks as they look to build for the future.
A Modern Center-Back for Barcelona Atletic
According to Diario Sport, Onstein has already successfully completed his medical in Catalunya and is set to officially sign his contract.
The youngster will be integrated into Julian Belletti’s Atletic squad, where he is expected to be a cornerstone of the reserve team’s defense.
Known for his explosive speed and physical presence, Onstein fits the “modern defender” profile—comfortable with the ball at his feet and capable of driving forward from the back.

The Battle for Youth Talent: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid
The signing of Onstein is part of a broader trend in Spanish football, where Barcelona and Real Madrid are increasingly competing to secure the world’s most promising teenagers before their market value skyrockets.
While Real Madrid has recently focused on South American and French markets for their defensive reinforcements, Barcelona is doubling down on the Benelux region and local youth.
Along with Onstein, the Blaugrana have also secured deals for Patricio Pacifico and are reportedly close to signing Hamza Abdelkarim.
Technical Profile: What Onstein Brings to Spain
Stijn Haeldermans, the technical coordinator at Jong Genk, spoke highly of the defender’s attributes, noting that his technical proficiency and ability to play in high-pressure spaces make him a perfect fit for the Spanish style of play.
For Barcelona, the hope is that Onstein can follow the path of other youth prospects who have successfully transitioned from the reserve side to the first team under the club’s current philosophy.
