Alonso Draws a Line: Real Madrid Told to Break Free From the Mbappé Dependence

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has issued a firm challenge to his attacking unit, insisting the team must find “alternatives” to Kylian Mbappé as concerns grow about the club’s increasing reliance on the French superstar.

Los Blancos returned from the international break perched at the top of La Liga and sitting eighth in the Champions League standings.

Despite losing only two games across all competitions, the shadow of overdependence on Mbappé’s goals continues to follow them.

“After every match, we analyze it,” Alonso said. “We didn’t manage to score in Liverpool or Vallecas. It’s not just down to Mbappé, it’s down to the team. When we don’t score, we have to look for alternatives that don’t just involve the striker. That could be the wingers from the second line or from set pieces. The goals will come, I have no doubt about that.”

Mbappé has surged ahead as the only Real Madrid player to reach double digits this season—18 goals in 16 matches—while Vinícius Junior lags behind on five. Alonso had previously brushed aside concerns, but now he appears ready to demand more from the rest of his squad.

Real Madrid’s Wake-Up Call: A Demand to Break the Mbappé Dependence

The winter schedule is relentless, and Alonso knows Real Madrid cannot afford to lose momentum.

The Spaniard urged his entire squad to be physically and mentally prepared, especially with eight matches looming between Sunday and December 20.

Ensuring everyone is fully engaged is crucial, particularly given the spotlight surrounding the Brazilian duo Vinícius and Rodrygo.

Vinícius appeared frustrated after being substituted in Real Madrid’s 2–1 El Clásico win, his sharp exchange with Alonso sparking speculation about tensions and even a possible summer exit.

Alonso has since insisted the matter is “settled.”

Rodrygo faces a different battle. Used sparingly this season, his unease dates back to Carlo Ancelotti’s final months, when he was frequently deployed out of position.

Just three La Liga and Champions League starts this campaign have reignited rumors that he could be edging toward the departure lane.

How Alonso intends to reintegrate both Brazilians remains uncertain, but their track records show exactly how devastating they can be when trusted in the right roles.

Latest on Real Madrid’s Defensive Concerns

Éder Militão will miss the upcoming match against Elche due to an adductor issue, though Alonso emphasized the injury “isn’t serious.”

Meanwhile, Antonio Rüdiger is nearing a return. Alonso was cautious about confirming his availability for Elche, pointing instead to a potential comeback against Olympiacos in midweek Champions League action.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is also expected to be fully fit after participating in team training throughout the November break.
