Flick Sets Two Conditions Before Renewing His Barcelona Contract

Spanish media reports revealed on Friday that Hansi Flick, head coach of FC Barcelona, has decided to postpone signing a new contract with the club for the time being, setting two key conditions before committing his future to the Catalan side.

Flick is currently under contract with Barcelona until June 2027, but the club’s management is eager to secure his services for a longer period. The German coach renewed his deal last May for an additional season, yet Barcelona are now pushing to extend his contract by one more year, until June 2028, as a sign of trust and stability.

According to reports, a meeting was held a few days ago at a hotel in Barcelona between Flick and club president Joan Laporta, later joined by sporting director Deco. During the meeting, Barcelona officials expressed their desire to extend Flick’s contract so that he would begin next season with an improved agreement, giving him greater authority inside the dressing room and reinforcing the club’s confidence in his project.

Despite maintaining an excellent relationship with both Laporta and Deco, Flick prefers to wait until the end of the current season before opening formal talks about renewal. The 60-year-old coach, who turns 61 in February, is currently focused on enjoying his role at Barcelona without committing to a long-term future prematurely.

This cautious approach is not new for Flick. Last season, he also delayed discussions regarding his contract until the campaign was nearly complete, choosing instead to concentrate fully on daily work with his players and evaluating their progress on the pitch.

One of the main factors behind Flick’s hesitation is the upcoming Barcelona presidential elections, scheduled for next year. The German coach is reluctant to extend his stay without clarity over whether Laporta — the president who brought him to the club — will remain in charge.

In principle, Flick would not oppose staying at Barcelona for another season if two conditions are met: the team meets its sporting objectives this season, and Laporta is re-elected as president. Flick is said to be very happy living in Barcelona and has grown fond of both the club and the city.

However, to properly assess this scenario, Flick believes the right moment for a decision will be after the season concludes, once results, club stability, and leadership are clearer.

It is worth noting that Flick’s start to the season was not without difficulties. A series of injuries slowed the team’s progress, delaying their ability to reach the level the coach had envisioned. Flick is also fully aware of the unique pressure and expectations that come with managing a club of Barcelona’s stature.

Despite these challenges, Flick is widely considered one of Laporta’s most successful sporting decisions. Under his leadership, Barcelona have regained momentum despite severe financial restrictions and limited investment in the transfer market. The German coach has improved the team’s numbers compared to the Xavi Hernández era, delivered important trophies, restored the club’s European competitiveness, and shown strong faith in young talents.

For now, Flick’s future remains open — with the final decision expected only once the season reaches its conclusion.
