Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of re-signing academy graduate James Garner — three years after Erik ten Hag allowed him to leave for just £9 million.
The 23-year-old midfielder has quietly rebuilt his career since joining Everton in 2022, becoming one of David Moyes’ most reliable players this season.
His form has not gone unnoticed at Old Trafford, where new boss Rúben Amorim is keen to strengthen his midfield options with players who already understand the club’s DNA.

From United Exit to Everton Engine Room
Garner, once seen as one of United’s brightest academy prospects, was sold to Everton shortly after Ten Hag’s arrival.
The Dutch manager, who preferred more experienced options such as Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, allowed the youngster to leave in search of regular football.
Since then, Garner has flourished.
He’s made over 90 appearances for Everton, often impressing with his work rate and tactical discipline — even filling in at right-back when needed.
This season, with the Toffees sitting comfortably in the top half of the Premier League table, he’s been ever-present alongside new signings Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, earning widespread praise for his composure and consistency.
Manchester United Monitoring His Situation
According to reports from United in Focus, Manchester United’s recruitment department are “exploring the conditions” for a possible return, with Garner’s contract at Goodison Park set to expire in 2026.
Transfer insider Graeme Bailey confirmed the club’s renewed interest: “United are aware of James Garner’s situation. They always keep tabs on academy graduates, and he’s playing particularly well. He’s received strong internal reports within the recruitment team.”

However, Everton are reportedly keen to offer Garner a new deal, which could complicate any potential move unless United decide to make a formal offer next summer.
Garner Reflects on His Departure
Speaking to BBC Sport in 2023, Garner admitted that leaving United was one of the toughest choices of his career — but also the right one.
“When I came back to United, I felt like I had done enough to get a shot,” he said. “But I got injured on the first day, and that set me back a few weeks. The manager didn’t get to see me in training or matches.
After two full seasons in men’s football, I wanted to be part of a team — ideally starting games. I knew I wasn’t going to get that at United, so I made the decision to move. It was hard to leave one of the best clubs in the world, but it’s a decision I’m happy I made.”
A Return on the Horizon?
A comeback would mark a rare reversal in Manchester United’s transfer history — bringing back a player they once deemed surplus.
Yet under Amorim, the club’s new philosophy emphasizes youth, technical intelligence, and homegrown spirit — traits Garner embodies.
While a deal remains uncertain, the story has captured the imagination of fans who watched him rise through the academy ranks.
For now, United’s eyes are firmly fixed on Everton’s No. 37 — the one that got away, and perhaps, the one who might return.
