Mourinho Shuts Down Real Madrid Return Rumors Ahead of Champions League Clash

José Mourinho has insisted he is more than capable of saying “no” to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, playing down mounting speculation about a sensational return to the Santiago Bernabéu.

Speaking ahead of Benfica’s high-stakes Champions League knockout tie against his former club, the 63-year-old addressed the rumors fueled by a unique break clause in his current contract.

While Mourinho led Madrid to glory between 2010 and 2013, he was firm about his current loyalty to the Portuguese giants.

“Can you say no? Yes, you can,” Mourinho told reporters when asked about rejecting an approach from Perez.

The Special Connection: Mourinho Opens Up on Perez and Real Madrid Future

Despite admitting to a “great friendship” with the Madrid chief, Mourinho explained that his contract clause was originally designed to protect Benfica during their recent elections.

“I gave everything to Real Madrid… but I don’t want to encourage stories that don’t exist,” he added, clarifying that his only current commitment is to Benfica.

Interestingly, Mourinho offered a vote of confidence to the man currently in the Madrid dugout, Álvaro Arbeloa. While aiming to knock Madrid out of Europe, he backed Arbeloa to succeed long-term:

  • Professional Respect: Mourinho praised Arbeloa’s personality and deep connection to the club.
  • The Challenge: He expects a much tougher test than the 4-2 victory his side secured in January.
  • Favorites: Mourinho still labeled Real Madrid as the “number one favorites” to lift their 16th Champions League title.
