Nuno Espirito Santo Condemns Racism After Real Madrid vs Benfica Scenes

West Ham United head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has spoken out strongly against the scenes that unfolded during Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Benfica, saying he “condemns” what happened and hopes the authorities can “kick out” racism for good.

West Ham chief urges tough response following Real Madrid star Vinicius claim

The Hammers manager, who is part of the BAME community, said he was appalled by the controversy after Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr accused Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni of directing racist abuse toward him.

The match was halted for several minutes as the allegation was raised, before Real went on to win 1-0.

The incident was further fuelled after the game when Benfica head coach Jose Mourinho appeared to criticise Vinicius, suggesting the Brazilian had “invited trouble” because of the way he celebrated his goal.

Santo refused to comment directly on Mourinho’s controversial remarks, but stressed that the issue must be handled properly and decisively.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of West Ham’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth on Saturday, Santo said:
“That situation, I condemn it. There is no place for that in our society. I hope the authorities continue to fight against racism.”

Away from the Champions League controversy, Santo also praised the impact of January signing Taty Castellanos, who has played a key role in West Ham’s recent resurgence.

The Argentine forward has scored twice since arriving from Lazio, and Santo believes his energy and style have boosted the squad.

“I think we have been lucky to have him,” Santo said. “Since he joined, he has brought a lot of energy. The hard work, the goals. The way he plays football — that is more important.”

Looking ahead to Bournemouth, Santo insisted West Ham must show respect if they want to take a positive result.

“I see it as another game,” he added. “Focus on ourselves and ignore the other teams.”

West Ham head into the weekend unbeaten in their last nine Premier League meetings with Bournemouth, recording three wins and six draws since their last defeat in January 2019
