The current situation of Toni Fernandez at Barcelona explained

Toni Fernandez is widely regarded as one of the most promising talents within the La Masia ranks, with many expecting him to be the next youngster to cement a place in the first team.

The 17-year-old winger gained significant attention during Barcelona’s pre-season tour of Asia and eventually made his official La Liga debut in October against Girona.

Following that appearance, Fernandez expressed his confidence, stating that while the pace of the top flight is much faster, he felt fully prepared to contribute to Hansi Flick’s squad.

However, despite that early promise, Fernandez hasn’t featured for the senior side since his debut.

This has led to questions among the fanbase regarding his development and why he hasn’t been integrated more quickly into the first-team rotation during the winter months.

Hansi Flick prioritizes match fitness for Toni Fernandez at Barca Atletic

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has shed light on Flick’s strategy for the teenager.

The German coach reportedly decided that Fernandez should return to Barca Atletic to ensure he receives consistent playing time rather than sitting on the senior bench.

Under the guidance of Albert Belletti, Fernandez has been productive, making 15 appearances this season while recording three goals and two assists.

Flick has clearly not forgotten the youngster, as evidenced by his inclusion in the squad for the late January clash against Real Oviedo.

Although he remained an unused substitute in the 3-0 victory, his presence in the matchday squad indicates he remains in the first-team plans.

While opportunities may become scarcer as Barcelona enters the decisive phase of the season competing on three fronts, the club’s management continues to keep a very close eye on his progression.
