Later, José María obtained approval from the Spanish Football Federation to launch the La Liga competition with only 10 participating clubs. The first edition was played in 1929.
The 10 clubs that took part in the inaugural season were: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Real Sociedad, Atlético Madrid, Real Unión, Arenas, Athletic Bilbao, and Racing Santander.
All of these clubs participated in the very first edition of the Spanish league, as they were the clubs that had managed to win the Copa del Rey since the start of the competition, earning the right to take part in La Liga.
