Press reports have revealed the reason behind Spanish coach Luis Enrique, the current head coach of Paris Saint-Germain’s first football team, rejecting a move to Manchester United.
Several previous reports indicated strong interest from Manchester United’s management in appointing Luis Enrique starting next season, following the departure of Rúben Amorim.
United are currently enjoying a strong spell under English coach Michael Carrick, with the team remaining unbeaten and winning four consecutive matches for the first time in two years.
Luis Enrique is considered a major dream target for the English club’s hierarchy after the outstanding season he delivered with Paris Saint-Germain, winning all possible trophies, in addition to his distinguished history with Barcelona.
Luis Enrique Rejects Manchester United Move Over Champions League Doubts
According to the British newspaper The Mirror, Enrique is expected to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain this summer, despite United’s strong interest and talks with his agents in Paris.
The report added that Enrique’s refusal to coach Manchester United was due to doubts about managing a team that may fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.
Luis Enrique led Paris Saint-Germain to their first-ever UEFA Champions League title last season after a 5–0 victory over Inter Milan.
Under his leadership, PSG also won the Intercontinental Cup for the first time in their history, defeating Brazilian side Flamengo on penalties, bringing their total to six trophies in the 2024/2026 season.
This marked PSG’s sixth trophy of the 2024/2025 season under Luis Enrique, after winning the Champions League, the domestic treble (league, cup, and super cup), and the UEFA Super Cup.
As a result, Luis Enrique became the third coach in football history to win six trophies in a single season with the same team, after compatriot Pep Guardiola and German coach Hansi Flick.
